SAINT PATRICK'S CATHEDRAL

Situated right across the road from the Rockefeller Center and beside Saks department store is Saint Patrick's Cathedral. This is the biggest gothic Catholic Cathedral in the country and is the seat of the Archbishop of New York, currently Edward Egan.
The Cathedral opened in 1879 and since then has undergone many additions and renovations. In the late 1920s its organ was installed which has more than 7,000 pipes. Its beautiful stained glass windows were made by various renowned artists including Connick who completed its most famous, the rose window, located above the pipe organ.
Today the cathedral, as well as attracting millions of visitors, is a working church which can seat over 2,000 people. The Pieta, created by American sculptor, William O. Partridge, is a known attraction and is approximately 3 times larger than the Pieta in Rome. The huge bronze doors at the entrance to the cathedral feature statutes depicting the saints of New York. You might also like to view the shrine of St Elizabeth Ann Seton, dedicated to first Native American saint who founded the Sisters of Mercy.
Saint Patrick's is open from 7.30 am until 8.30 pm daily. Masses are held frequently between 7 am and 5.30 pm. A beautiful church in the most unlikely of locations.
