New York has been described in such way as the big apple and the city that never sleeps. Yet neither does New York justice. Its appeal lies in its variety of characteristics. It offers something for everyone no matter what your language, age or interest. In that sense it is many cities in one. If the hustle and bustle, the lights and the noise of a big city are what brings you to New York, you won't be disappointed. Times Square is like a year-round Christmas tree. Neon lights and the glamour of Broadway theatre light up this area. Around the classic shops of nearby 5th Avenue, including Saks and Tiffany's, are some of the landmarks which we would most associate with New York such as the Rockefeller centre, St Patrick's Cathedral and the fabulous views from the Empire State building. For the culturally aware, Manhattan is a feast for the senses. Some of the world's top museums are located here including the Museum of Modern Art, the Metropolitan Museum of Art and the Guggenheim. The city has been the inspiration for many films and in some parts of Manhattan you will feel like you have stepped into a Woody Allen film. Greenwich Village and the East Village, in particular, offer the more bohemian side of Manhattan life with quirkier shops and a more relaxed pace. New York is also the shopping capital of the world. The globe's largest department store, Macy's, is located here. Discount shops, in the city and its surrounds, offer designer clothes at less than half price. And if you are looking for a unique oddity, chances are you will be able to find it here. The poignant Ground Zero is worth a visit, if only to remind us of everything that this city has gone through and the resolve with which it has rebuilt itself since September 11th 2001. For an overview of the city take a bus tour. This will give you a chance to see all of Manhattan as well as the less tourist-filled areas such as Harlem and the Bronx. A cruise trip around New York Harbour is also recommended to take in the Statue of Liberty and Ellis Island and to view this thriving metropolis from a distance. This is a city which is proud of its diversity and as such is welcoming to people of every nationality. Very few large cities can claim to make its visitors feel like friends. New York manages to do so with ease. |
