The Rockefeller Center is famous for many things. You might know it for its winter outdoor ice-rink or for its Christmas tree which dominates 5th Avenue in the run up to the holidays. Likewise, you might be familiar with the Radio City Music Hall which is housed on its complex. Whatever your reason for visiting, Rockefeller has a lot to offer. Built in 1931, the Rockefeller Center was the first site of its kind to include shops, restaurants, gardens and offices side by side, and it is still one of the world's best. During October to April an ice-rink is set up outside the plaza, but be warned, you may be waiting for hours as the rink can only contain 150 skaters at one time. Inside are restaurants and shops of every variety. NBC studios are housed in the GE Building and some of the country's top shows are recorded here including Friends, The Today Show and David Letterman's nightly talk show. Guided tours are provided giving the history of the studio. New York's oldest working theatre, the Lyceum Theatre, is located here, too. The Radio City Music Hall holds entertainment shows year round but probably its most dazzling is the Christmas Spectacular featuring the Rockettes dance troupe. This show runs from November until January and features up to 4 shows daily. |
